Boosting water supply in the East Africa Community, fighting water hyacinth control and protecting the Mount Elgon ecosystem top the list of major projects proposed in the East African regional budget.
Projects under the Lake Victoria Basin Commission (LVBC), have been allocated $38 million of the 2012-13 EAC development activities budget of $125 million.
Implementation of the Lake Victoria Water Supply and Sanitation Programme Phase II, which targets 15 secondary towns in the EAC partner states, will get $13 million.
The funds are part of the $121 million package for the second phase of the programme to provide long-term solutions to water and sanitation woes for nearly 3.8 million of East Africa’s urban poor, where the African Development Bank has contributed $108 million.
LVBC executive director Dr Canisius Kanangire told The EastAfrican that with a $121 million cash injection, his commission would fast-track the implementation of the second phase of the project.
“Through the second phase, we will carry out activities that would result in residents enjoying the water and sanitation services,” Dr Kanangire explained.
